The University of Notre Dame recently received two awards for the exemplary design of Jenkins and Nanovic Halls. The Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) awarded the University a Distinguished Building Award on Oct. 26, and the Chicago-Midwest chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) awarded the University a 2018 Acanthus Award on Saturday (Nov. 17).

Designed by HBRA Architects, Jenkins and Nanovic Halls earned the Distinguished Building Award from the AIA for excellence and distinction in architecture based on originality of design, detailing, and execution of the design concept. Using great precision, architects integrated the University’s collegiate gothic style with contemporary design, including modern building floor-to-floor heights, massing, and cavity-wall construction while also adhering to sustainable design practices.

With approximately 185,000 total square feet, Jenkins Hall and the adjoining Nanovic Hall, which opened their doors to students in fall 2017, contain several distinct spaces such as the following:

  • The Forum, centrally located between Jenkins and Nanovic Halls, is an elegant space for hosting distinguished speakers and special events. It can accommodate 175 to 200 seated guests and serves as a welcoming space for international discourse.
  • With state-of-the art global communications technology, the 1,723 square-foot Mediation Room in Jenkins Hall serves as an educational space modeled after the United Nations to train students in negotiating a peace agreement or settlement to end conflict.
  • The All Saints Chapel and a multi-faith Prayer Room in Jenkins Hall offer students of all religious traditions space to express their faith.
  • The Integration Lab in Jenkins Hall allows students to engage in creating solutions for real-world problems based on design thinking concepts.
  • Laboratory and research spaces in Nanovic Hall are designed to encourage collaboration among faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students.

The University received a 2018 Acanthus Award from the ICAA for the excellence of classical design of Jenkins and Nanovic Halls. The award recognizes the buildings’ timeless quality that is at once traditional and contemporary.

Jenkins Hall was made possible by a gift from the late Donald R. Keough and is named in honor of Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C. It is home to the Keough School of Global Affairs and its institutes: the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies, Ansari Institute for Global Engagement with Religion, Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies, Klau Center for Civil and Human Rights, Notre Dame Initiative for Global Development, Kellogg Institute for International Studies and Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies.
