Several construction projects are scheduled to take place next week during Fall Break, when many in the Notre Dame community leave the area to visit family and friends.
While the planning teams within Facilities, Design & Operations and Campus Safety have taken care to minimize the disruptions to faculty, staff and students who will remain on campus, there will be some changes to pedestrian and vehicular traffic beginning Monday, Oct. 19.
Please see the descriptions below to help prepare you for the walkway and road closures related to these projects.
Dorr Road access gate closed
Beginning Monday, Oct. 19, there will be no entrance to or exit from the west side of campus through the access gate on Dorr Road. (Detailed map)
Parking will remain accessible in the D6 North and D6 South parking lots, but Dorr Road will be closed between the access gate and West Lake Hall. In addition, parking along Dorr Road will be unavailable.
Faculty, staff and students should use St. Mary’s Road as an alternate route during this time as workers install an additional gate and realign roadside parking to improve traffic flow.
Dorr Road is expected to reopen for through traffic and parking by Monday, Oct. 26.
Leahy Drive closure
Leahy Drive, on the east side of campus, will be closed to through traffic from Monday, Oct. 19, to Sunday, Oct. 25, as construction crews complete utility work related to the new McCourtney Hall research building. (Detailed map)
Motorists should use Twyckenham Drive as an alternate route to access the northeast and southeast areas of campus.
Access along Leahy Drive will be restricted between Bulla Road (at the Early Childhood Development Center) and Moose Krause Circle/Courtney Lane (near the Guglielmino Athletics Complex). Drivers who need to access the circle drive east of the Hesburgh Library can do so south of the construction zone, at Leahy Drive and Moose Krause Circle/Courtney Lane.
The B2 Library lot gates on Leahy will be accessible during construction. However, parking will be temporarily reduced by approximately 30 spaces.
Tunnel repairs near Clarke Memorial Fountain and Fieldhouse Mall
From Monday, Oct. 19, to Saturday, Oct. 24, repairs will be made to the utility tunnel access hatches near Clarke Memorial Fountain and Fieldhouse Mall, east of LaFortune Student Center. (Detailed map)
This work will impact pedestrian access to the walkway between the fountain and the North Quad.
Vehicular traffic on Cavanaugh Drive between LaFortune Student Center and Cavanaugh Hall may be temporarily restricted to one lane during the repairs.
Tunnel repairs near Cushing Hall of Engineering
The sidewalk near Cushing Hall of Engineering will be partially closed beginning Monday, Oct. 19. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured around the work zone for utility tunnel repairs. (Detailed map)
Work is scheduled to be complete by the end of the day on Friday, Oct. 23.
Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes maintenance
On Thursday, Oct. 22, and Friday, Oct. 23, there will be no access to the candles at the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes due to routine maintenance and cleaning of the Grotto’s stone and pavement.
Short-term parking construction in two central locations
Crews will begin work on Monday, Oct. 19, to create new short-term parking in two central campus locations.
Ten total spaces will be created – five between Decio Faculty Hall and O’Shaughnessy Hall and five at the southeast corner of Galvin Life Sciences Center/Freimann Life Science Center and Hank Family Center for Environmental Sciences.
Construction is not expected to affect travel on the nearby walkways or Moose Krause Circle.
The Parking Office expects the new short-term parking locations to be ready for use by Monday, Oct. 26. Motorists will be able to access the spaces from Moose Krause Circle and park for up to 90 minutes at a time.
